A Japanese mountaineer, Nobukazo Kuriki is nearing the final stage of reaching his ultimate destination to climb Mount Everest in his latest attempt after losing nine fingers in his previous ones. The 33 year old is the lone climber to make the attempt this autumn season. He is also the only person to climb Mount Everest after the devastating earthquake in Nepal this April, which destroyed the climbing industry owing to 9,000 people that were killed in the earthquake and the avalanches that followed.
This is Kuriki’s 5th attempt in six years. He lost all his fingers and a thumb in 2012 when he was forced to spend two days at 27,000 feet, in a snow hole in temperatures falling below -20C.
