NYPD Officer Shot in the Head, Dies

A New York police officer died Tuesday night after he was shot in the head in East Harlem. Officer Randolph Holder, 33, was responding to reports of gunshots with other officers assigned to patrol public housing when they encountered a man riding a bike. The suspect exchanged fire with the officers and struck Randolph in the head. Holder, a native of Guyana who had been an officer for five years, was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and wounded in the foot. He was taken to a hospital and was expected to be released into police custody Wednesday, Commissioner William Bratton said at a press conference. Holder is the fourth officer to be killed in the line of duty in the last 11 months.

The officer, Randolph Holder, 33, a Guyanese immigrant and a police officer for five years, was the fourth killed in the line of duty in the past 11 months, the police commissioner, William J. Bratton, said during an emotional news conference early today, the New York Times reported. A suspect was in custody, the commissioner said.
Holder and his partners were responding to reports of gunshots around 8:30 p.m. when they encountered a man riding a bicycle on East 120th Street on a pedestrian path over Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive. Gunfire was exchanged, and Holder was hit in the head.

Randolph HolderHe was taken in critical condition to Harlem Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m., Bratton said.
“He ran toward danger,” Commissioner Bratton said. “It was the last time he will respond to that call.”
Holder was the son and grandson of police officers.
“Three generations of police in this family. And now the latest generation served here with us in the New York City Police Department,” Bratton said.

Officer Holder, a Guyanese-American, is the son of Reginald Holder, a former member of the Guyana Police Force. “As former police officers, we know the dangers law-enforcement officers confront regularly as they strive to keep our streets safe. Their sacrifice is immeasurable and for this we are eternally grateful,” the GEPAOA stated.
The association, which is also based in Brooklyn, New York, sent sincere condolences to the entire Holder family and called on all members of the Guyanese community “to join us in supporting Mayor Bill deBlasio as he guides New York City through this tempestuous period.”

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements have been announced, with the viewing scheduled to take place on Tuesday next at the Community Church of the Nazarene at 1414 Central Avenue, Far Rockaway from 9:00 – 18:00 hrs, while the funeral service will take place at the same venue the following day from 15:00 hrs.
