Turkish F-16 fighter jets shot a Russian SU-24 warplane out of the sky Tuesday after it ignored warnings for violating the country’s airspace near the Syrian border, a Turkish military official told Reuters. The plane reportedly crashed in the area known by Turks as “Turkmen Mountain” in northern Syria near the border. At least one of the two pilots was reportedly killed. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident a “stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorists.” A U.S. official told The Daily Beast that Turkey had not warned the coalition that it was about to take down a plane. “They just did it,” the official said. “We need to make sure this doesn’t become something worse.”

Turkey Releases Russian Plane WarningsTurkey released audio recordings of what are allegedly repeated warnings from the military to the pilot of a Russian plane that was shot down this week. The recordings demonstrate that the pilot was told a number of times that the plane was approaching Turkey’s airspace. According to the recordings, there is seemingly no response from the Russian pilot. Turkey shot down the plane on Tuesday, after the military claimed it had crossed over into its airspace. However, a surviving Russian pilot from the plane alleged that there were no warnings.

Turkey on Monday called on Russia to prove its claim that the Turkish military shot down a Russian plane in an effort to protect its oil trade with ISIS. "You should put your documents on the table if you have any," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in response to Russia's President Vladimir Putin's statement claiming Turkey was buying oil from ISIS. Erdogan also vowed to step down if Russia' allegations proved to be true. Ankara maintains it shot down the Russian plane on the Syrian border after repeatedly warning the jet to leave its airspace. Moscow insists the plane did not cross the border and that it gave advance notice of its flight path to the U.S., Turkey's ally. A state department spokesman on Monday said the U.S. did not receive information on Russia's air operation.
