A highly representative sample of comments about Russian president Vladimir Putin being currently posted on popular US news sites such as Yahoo News:

For the first time in my 65 years, I am ashamed of my President, and proud of a Russian leader!

Why am I jealous that Russia has Putin? Maybe we should just let Putin take care of the ISIS problem because we have failed to do anything but spend a bunch of money and arm rebels.
At least Putin will stand and fight. Obama is either an ISIS sympathizer or a coward.

Putin is the one world leader who has the balls to carry out what needs to be carried out. Obama is still waiting for his to drop.
My feeling is Putin will not be quite as sedate as Obongo and actually do something to protect his people. It is what a real leader does.
Putin is a doer, while Obama is a talker. Never judge a man on what he says, but on what he does.
Wish we had a president w/ balls. Apparently Putin came out and said, “It is up to God to forgive the terrorists. It is up to me to send them to him.” And we are stuck w/ Obama folks.
Applause to Mr. Putin for leading the fight against ISIS, unlike another guy who draws lines in the sand and allows them to be crossed; and, who seems to have an agenda supportive of ISIS.
May Putin do to the terrorists what the US and every other country doesn’t have the guts to do.

The Guardian can be such a ridiculous Leftist rag, but I've seen a LOT of support for how Putin is responding to the terrorist threat, and I've seen a LOT of Leftists criticizing Obama for what appears to be willful ignorance of the Islamist element of what we're facing.

These are extremely interesting times that we're living in, that much is certain.

The Guardian may  be leftist on some social issues    but in political and economic matters it is as right wing as they comes. They lead the chorus  in Putin Bashing 

The Guardian was the only British paper to be against the Iraq, Libyan and Afghanistan wars, gave Julian Assange his own column and recently blew the lid on the global surveilance networks (PRISM, MUSCULAR et al) run by the Western powers. It is the only mainstream British paper worth reading. It is the only one not funded by mega businesses.

Putin is as right wing as Obama. You cannot be the ruler of a mega-capitalist superpower and not be right wing. Left-wingers tentatively praise Putin because he points out the hypocrisy of Western leaders. Putin cuts through the bullsh*t and cuts through western media bias. But he is no better. He is guilty of the same behaviour. And no sane lefty celebrates him.

You shouldn't celebrate a "decisive", "aggressive", "cowboy" approach to dealing with ISIS either, be it by Putin or Obama (or his successor). None of these countries will adopt this path for altruistic or noble reasons.

The way to deal with ISIS in Syria is for the West to ignore Syria, publically accuse Saudi Arabia of supporting ISIS, embargo Saudi Arabia (and the Gulf States; UAE, Qatar etc), and let Assad deal with ISIS himself. Assad will eventually get old, be disposed and be replaced by his own people. ISIS will dry up without Western/Saudi support. This will not happen because the West and the Saudis are determined to control Syria and determined to run their pipes through it and Iraq.

Putin likewise has no real interest in ISIS. He just doesnt want Syria falling into western/Saudi control. His aggression is a direct response to Western aggression. If he escalates, they escalate, and vice versa. Putin cares as little about Syrian civilians as the US, and only about his own state's profits.
