IN a society where people are becoming more and more conscious of their health and well-being, a former West Indies captain has channelled his energies to ensuring that residents of the East Bank have their chance at accessing a healthy lifestyle.

Former Guyana and West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan is ready to open the doors to Fitness 53, his first off-field investment in the form of a gym and fitness centre.
The 35 year old gave the media a walkthrough of his Providence-based facility which features sections for weights, cardio, aerobics as well as a sauna and a fitness bar for persons serious about their training.
During a media walkthrough yesterday, Sarwan confirmed that he had the facility, officially called `Fitness 53’ after his West Indies ODI number, in thought for over five years and yesterday’s event marks his first investment off the field.
On the note of quality, Sarwan said, “The people would have to judge that, I don’t want to judge it myself, but I think you can tell it’s more of a modern kind of gym and we’ve really put a good team together to try and get it up to this standard and hopefully we will be able maintain it and sustain it.â€
He contended that the response has been great with persons already showing their interest in getting signed up, adding that he is generally surprised.
The cricketer continued, “I think it’s something that I’ve worked very hard to accomplish for the past year, year and a half and I wanted to put it together to offer something to the public, so that they will enjoy and of course try and help them with their health and that’s our focus.
“I’ve already spoken to the trainers and friend of mine who is in Trinidad, who is qualified and has worked with the Amazon Warriors over the past couple of years, and we will invite him to have a course with us probably within the next month and a half to two months when he gets time, so we’ve had a couple things planned to enhance our trainers,†continued the right-handed batsman.
Located between the Ramada Hotel and the National Stadium, Providence, the facility, which is expected to open on Tuesday will see patrons being charged $6000 for registration and a monthly fee of $5,500 and will open from 05:30 hrs to 22:00 hrs daily.Tuesday’s opening will be preceded by a cocktail reception and official ceremony on Monday evening.
