POLICE are seeking the public's assistance in the identification of a woman who was struck and killed in a hit and run accident along Queen's Park East, Port of Spain, yesterday morning.
The woman, who according to eyewitnesses is a Canadian national and was wearing a cream-coloured flowered dress, was seen crossing the road near to a construction site around 11.20 a.m.
As she began crossing a few cars stopped but a motorist driving a white Mazda 3 overtook a line of cars, struck the woman, pitched her body several feet from the point of impact causing her to land on the footpath that borders the Savannah.
She died on the spot.
A man who wanted to be known only as Sgt Hosten was working as security officer on the job-site and described what he saw.
“I was sitting down by a bench and I witnessed the lady crossing the road and a car coming at 40 mph hit her and tossed her in the air,†said the man.
He said he then went to the Belmont Police Station where he reported the matter.
The Express telephoned the Belmont Police Station but they said that the identity of the woman is not yet known to them but they are continuing investigations.
Fifteen people have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year when compared to three for the same period last year.
