SIR, I am seeking your intervention and help. I am divorced and presently a single parent with kids, three of minor age, six, 12 and 14 respectively and at secondary and primary schools. I gained five CXCs (General) in 2005 with one Grade Two and Four Grade Threes. I also did pre-university Social Work I and II from IDCE, all after I had divorced. During 2008 – 2009, I was reading for a Diploma in Social Work at the University of Guyana but unfortunately the next year I had to apply for leave of absent due to economical circumstances in my home.
I had applied at Teaching Service Commission and spoke with the Deputy Chairman. I took in several applications for a job as a nursery teacher and to date, for the past four years, no employment.
I also applied at the National Insurance Scheme, Berbice Branch, for a clerical position or whatever suits my qualifications but to date no employment.
Recently, I applied at the Public Service Commission where I saw a vacancy for Schools Welfare Officer and one of the job requirements was five CXCs and knowledge of school welfare.
I then applied because I have five CXCs and some knowledge of the School welfare, because I did pre-university IDCE and I had already completed one year of my Social Work diploma and was exposed to practical, theory in Social Work at schools, old folks home, the Palms, the prisons, etc, as part of our training, also planning programmes, doing interviews, counselling, identifying problems and finding ways and means for problem solving.
I sought some assistance from the Regional Chairman (Region Six). I was referred to the Region Six Education Officer who told me I don’t have experience and I cannot get the job.
And a next slap in the face, I received a reply from the Public Service Commission informing me that I do not have the qualifications, which is not the truth.
Sir, I do not feel employment at all times should be based on experience, especially, if it is a mature person like me who has the qualifications.
Sir, I am seeking your intervention as early as possible. I also have a student loan to repay. |
