Former president Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday declared that he does not have hidden wealth in shell accounts and is willing to declare his holdings, both local and overseas, if the opposition members would do the same.
“Anywhere, the answer is ‘no,’†Jagdeo said when asked by Stabroek News if, given the international focus on tax havens and shell accounts in wake of the leaked ‘Panama Papers,’ he had any unknown accounts.
“I am prepared, and I mentioned it to (Prime Minister Moses) Nagamootoo, because they like to talk… I saw him and I said ‘why don’t we go to the Parliament together, to ask Interpol to find out about all Members of Parliament who have bank accounts abroad, who have shares in companies etcetera.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Throughout their campaign, they berated, maligned, and promised to jail all those PPP people they claimed obtained wealth by devious means. A year later we are yet to see anyone prosecuted for the crimes they so vehemently barked on a daily basis. This is the second time Jagdeo is publicly challenging them to declare their assets , something the public has a right to know. I guarantee you this, Jagdeo's bold challenge will fall on deaf ears. Harmon already said he is not interested in the past.

Now Jagdeo has the Coalition on the backfoot. Why the Coalition does not want to ask Interpol and the Integrity Commission to find out about all Members of Parliament who have bank accounts abroad.

It is not illegal to have bank accounts in other countries. What is generally illegal in the different jurisdiction is not paying tax on your earnings. So wealthy individuals and companies set up accounts in tax havens from where business is conducted throuon those earnings.gh their accounts. No taxes are then paid

The income from businesses set up in tax havens is not reported to any government. There is no international law in existence to force these tax havens to disclose who the owners are even. Google, facebook, etc are all involved in funnelling money through tax havens. It is not illegal, yet. It is only considered to be immoral.
