London set to vote in first Muslim mayor

The U.K.’s main opposition Labour Party lost seats in local and regional elections, adding to pressure on the party’s divisive leader Jeremy Corbyn in his first major electoral test.

Among the first results to emerge after Thursday’s elections were those for the Scottish Parliament, where the center-left Labour Party lost numerous seats to the pro-independence Scottish National Party. The Conservatives became the second-largest opposition party, surpassing Labour in Scotland, which had been a long-term stronghold for the party.

One potential bright spot for Labour could be in London, where opinion polls suggests its candidate Sadiq Khan is the favorite to win. Khan, the son of immigrants from Pakistan, would become the U.K. capital’s first Muslim mayor. The results won’t be announced until later Friday.


The post has been held since 2008 by Boris Johnson, a prominent Conservative who is campaigning to leave the EU and has clashed with U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron in the increasingly heated debate. He hadn’t sought a third term. Like Mr. Johnson, Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith wants the U.K. to leave the bloc.

The 41-year-old Goldsmith, the son of a billionaire, had accused 45-year-old Khan, of being too soft on extremism. Goldsmith has attacked Khan for appearances alongside Islamic extremists. Mr. Cameron repeated this criticism in Parliament on Wednesday. Mr. Khan has said he has represented some unsavory figures through his former career as a human rights lawyer and said he has spent years fighting extremism.

I'd like to see how the mainstream UK media's spin on his Muslim status would be. Though it seems Mr Khan has (wisely) already planned ahead of that.

I don't know if you know who is Vanga. If you do not I will tell you. She is a Bulgarian prophet, a real one they say, who had many very precise data from the future along with the precise time of her death.
Now, she made a prophecy about Muslims taking over Europe starting from 2016. I have nothing against Muslim people but this is more than just whether I like someone or not. These things and liberal thoughts are going to be the start. I will just remind you about one little fact. 
I am from Serbia and back in the time when we were the SFRJ (Yugoslavia) with Tito as a president had similar liberal move. Tito allowed some Albanians to cross the border and settle in Serbian Kosovo and Metohija. They were migrating and it was a huge number that we accepted here.
If you follow the news, those same Albanians claim now that Kosovo is their territory and they are taking it from us. Recently they were allowed to compete in UEFA competitions as Republic of Kosovo.

I'm not entirely informed on the muslim status on the UK, but it seems this should be no surprise by the seemingly big muslim population there?
