TT ranks 7th in countries with highest crime rate

TRINIDAD and Tobago has been ranked 7th in a listing of 10 countries with the highest crime rates.

The ranking is from an article published by US media company Gazzette Review on Friday and is reportedly based on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime statistical reports, national crime index reports, reports on national corruption and reports of non-government paramilitary actions This country, the only Caribbean nation on the list, is described as follows: “The twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago when taken in as a tourist destination, can seem quite appealing.

Warm tropical beaches, palm leaves flowing in the Caribbean air, and crystal clear waves falling upon the shore. This lovely image tends to unfortunately break down if one leaves the safer districts that hold the resorts of the islands. Surprising as it may seem, Trinidad and Tobago both have an epidemic of gang related crimes.

While not nearly as violent as the previously mentioned nation at a murder rate 30 per 100,000 inhabitants, it does tend to have more thefts occur within its borders. Drug distribution and kidnappings have also risen substantially over the past decade, which has been a major concern for the local government who have been working diligently to combat it”.

This country’s neighbour Venezuela topped the list followed by South Sudan and South Africa, while Kenya was number 10.
