Donald Trump’s campaign has apparently fired its manager, Corey Lewandowski, The New York Times reports. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future,†spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in a statement. The move comes as the presumptive Republican nominee’s chances against Hillary Clinton in November are crashing and as he faces a potential coup at the GOP convention in July. Trump had said “I don’t discard people†after Lewandowski was charged with battering a reporter this spring, but the Times reports he faced “increasing concerns†from “allies and donors, as well as his children, about the next phase of the campaign....â€
Over the past few months, in-fighting has erupted inside the campaign between allies of Lewandowski and Paul Manafort, the campaign chairman and chief strategist hired in the spring. Manafort’s allies were accused of planting a story about Lewandowski in the New York Post hinting at an affair with spokeswoman Hicks. Hillary Clinton delivered on a promise to rail against Donald Trump’s capacity to handle economic policy decisions during her Tuesday afternoon speech in Ohio. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee made repeated references to Trump’s debt issues, bankruptcy filings, and lack of serious policy proposals—ultimately suggesting the likely Republican nominee would bring about a recession if elected. “Donald Trump has said he’s qualified to be president because of his business record,†Clinton said. “A few days ago, he said, and I quote, ‘I’m going to do for the country what I did for my business.’ So let’s take a look at what he did for his business: he’s written a lot of books about business—they all seem to end at chapter 11,†she jabbed. “Over the years, he intentionally ran up huge amounts of debt on his companies and then he defaulted. He bankrupted his companies not once, not twice, but four times. Hundreds of people lost their jobs; shareholders were wiped out; contractors, many of them small businesses, took heavy losses; many went bust. But Donald Trump, he came out fine.â€
