South Africa local elections: ANC loses in capital Pretoria

South Africa's governing African National Congress has been defeated by the opposition Democratic Alliance in local polls in the capital Pretoria.
The DA took 43% of the vote compared with the ANC's 41% in Tshwane, the municipality that includes Pretoria.
The DA will need to form a coalition in order to secure control there.
The two major parties are also locked in a tight race to control the country's largest city, Johannesburg.
The ANC has also lost Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area in the Eastern Cape, which includes Port Elizabeth, to the DA.

Synopsis

Born in Nigeria in 1930, Chinua Achebe attended the University of Ibadan. In 1958, his groundbreaking novel Things Fall Apart was published. It went on to sell more than 12 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages. Achebe later served as the David and Marianna Fisher University professor and professor of Africana Studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He died on March 21, 2013, at age 82, in Boston, Massachusetts.
