Angela Merkel wants to ban burqas in Germany

German chancellor Angela Merkel called for a ban on burqas “wherever it is legally possible” in a controversial speech Tuesday.

Merkel made the declaration after she was re-elected chair of the Christian Democratic Union conference in Essen.

She is seeking another term as chancellor in fall 2017.

“The full veil must be banned wherever it is legally possible,” she said. “[It’s]not appropriate here.”

The audience burst into applause after she called for outlawing of the Islamic headwear. She also said she aims to stop an influx of migrants, which caused problems for the country last year, The Sun reported.

“A situation like the one in the late summer of 2015 cannot, should not and must not be repeated,” Merkel told supporters. “That was and is our, and my, declared political aim.”

But a total ban on burqas would violate Germany’s constitution, the BBC reported.

Last year roughly 890,000 asylum-seekers fled to Germany after Merkel allowed migrants, who were stuck in Hungary, into the country.
