Dominican Republic woman remanded for forging Guyana Immigration stamps

A 36-year-old Dominican Republic national who said she came to Guyana to hunt for a job, has found herself in problems with the law and was remanded to prison today.

The woman, Doris Vasquez, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Thursday morning and was charged with forging Guyana immigration stamps.

The court was told that she arrived in Guyana legally but in the process of extending her stay, she conspired with other individuals to forge four Guyana Immigration Service stamps with several extension dates.

Through an interpreter, the woman told the Court that she did not realise the stamps were fake and claimed that she paid someone believed to be an Immigration Officer, to add the stamps to her passport.

Bail was refused since the woman is not a Guyanese national and is a flight risk.  She is expected to make her next court appearance on February 21.  A number of other persons are still under investigation in the same case.
