London Mayor Sadiq Khan has urged the British government to cancel U.S. President Trump’s planned state visit in light of his recent Twitter criticism. The two have been involved in a war of words since Trump lashed out at Khan in the wake of the London terror attack on Sunday, implying the mayor’s reassurances to the public trivialized the seriousness of terrorism. Khan’s office said Trump had taken his words out of context, but the U.S. president continued with his criticism on Monday, accusing the mayor of making a “pathetic excuse” to explain his comments. Khan was quick to respond to Trump’s latest tirade, saying in comments to Channel 4 News on Monday night that the U.S. president should be uninvited from a scheduled state visit. “I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” he said. “When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong,” he said.
