HGPTV BLACK HISTORY MONTH FEATURE...
Winifred Gaskin (1916–1977): The voice of Guyanese women in public life. Gaskin was a pioneering Guyanese educator, journalist, diplomat, and politician who helped shape women’s leadership in the country’s early nation-building period.
Born in Buxton, she began her career as a teacher and later became active in trade union and political organizing. She worked closely with women’s groups to expand civic participation and social reform at a time when public leadership was overwhelmingly male.
Gaskin went on to become Guyana’s first woman minister, serving as Minister of Education, Youth, Race Relations and Community Development in the 1960s. In this role, she promoted literacy, community development, and youth engagement during the transition to independence.
She also represented Guyana internationally, serving as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, where she advocated for Guyanese migrants and strengthened diplomatic ties during the early years of statehood.
Winifred Gaskin’s career reflects how Guyanese women helped build national institutions while advancing gender equality and social development. She remains a symbol of public service, education, and women’s political leadership in Guyana.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
