Shoppers at an Ikea furniture store in Toronto, Canada were shocked to spot a monkey wearing a coat roaming the store's parking lot.
Police say the seven-month-old rhesus macaque monkey, named Darwin, had escaped from its crate and managed to find his way out of the car he was in.
The monkey was dressed for the conditions, wearing a coat and diapers, and shoppers said they thought it was fake until it started darting around the crowd and screaming at them.
"It was the weirdest thing." Shopper Stephanie Yim told CBC News. "I thought I was going insane."
She followed the monkey across the parking lot, taking photos.
"It would start 'monkey-screaming. It seemed like it was screaming around for someone [it] knew. It was sad."
Staff quickly called animal control, and it was captured and held until its owners came forward.
Keeping a monkey as a pet is banned in Toronto, and Darwin's owners have been fined $240.
The monkey is now likely to be rehoused in an animal sanctuary among his own kind.
