Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon underwent emergency life saving surgery yesterday at the Caribbean Heart Institute. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday after he complained of respiratory problems.
Two weeks earlier, he had to be rushed to hospital after he suffered the adverse effects of a fall.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon
Yesterday’s surgery was to remove what was described as a large clot near his heart. The condition is described as pulmonary embolism.
A source at Office of the President said that Dr. Luncheon is lucky to be alive. The source said that the Cabinet Secretary had been in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital when the he showed signs akin to developing a heart attack. It turned out that he had a pulmonary embolus.
Immediately he was transferred to the Caribbean Heart Institute where cardiologist Dr. Gary Stephens undertook an emergency intervention procedure.
He inserted a series of filters to prevent the clots from going to the heart and the lungs. Had this happened the Cabinet Secretary would have certainly died, the source said.
By yesterday afternoon, Dr. Luncheon, himself a medical doctor, was resting comfortably.
As fate would have it Dr. Stephens happened to be in Guyana at this time and was therefore at the right place at the right time. The resident cardiologist had already proceeded on vacation overseas.
