Google today is rolling out free public Wi-Fi in the Chelsea neighborhood in New York City.
The free public service, which is being unveiled today by Google Chief Technology Officer Ben Fried and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), is the largest contiguous Wi-Fi network in the entire city.
When folks enter the Chelsea neighborhood, which spans Gansevoort Street and 19th Street from 8th Avenue to the West Side Highway, including the Chelsea Triangle, 14th Street Park, and Gansevoort Plaza, they'll have free access to a Wi-Fi connection provided by Google.
The search giant has been making a push in New York City for months to deliver free Wi-Fi to residents. In June, for example, the company announced that Google Offers was sponsoring free Wi-Fi in over 200 hotspot locations across New York City. Six MTA subway stations also were offered free wireless connections. Google also offers a fiber Internet service in Kansas City, KS.
This time around, Sen. Schumer sees the Wi-Fi rollout as a potential benefit to New York's "Silicon Alley" by aiding the city in attracting technology companies.

Google don't do free gifts. There's a catch somewhere in it.

it's getting crazy how much google knows about my life. i could turn all these features off, but they make life easy. my entire electronic life is stored in google, plus they have all my location data from phone.
they've added google now to your phones. it learns about your life based on movement, email, and search history.
when it see's that i left my house, it will tell me how long it will take to get back home with traffic reports. if im in manahattan it will show public transport times to get back home, closest train etc. gives me weather reports based on where i am.
it scans my email and finds packages being delivered and shows me when it will be delivered. i took a trip to DC and it found it my reservation, gave me weather reports during travel etc.
it has learned about things that i like based on my search history. it gives me news reports on things im interested in. it knows what sports teams i like and will shows scores, games in progress based on that.
it's still learning and changes daily.
scary if you want it to be. i know i am the product google sells. they started by tailoring ads to what you searched for. then they started showing ads based on the email you receive. now they can give me ads based on where i go, where i am, places i walk by daily.
