Three Chinese nationals appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday for wounding a Guyanese man, who they accused of stealing from a store where they worked.
Twenty-six-year-old Yu Zhang Zhen; Zhon Yo Qiang, 33, and Zhong Song, 30, all of Lot 5 Robb Street, Georgetown, made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts to answer to a joint charge of unlawful wounding.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on December 24, 2012, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Gilraj Singh.
Singh was also charged and he pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on the same day, he unlawfully assaulted Yu Zhang Zhen.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Kerry Bostwick, related to the court that on the day in question, Singh went to a store where the three Chinese nationals work, and was accused of stealing an item. As such a scuffle ensued among the four persons during which the Chinese nationals wounded Singh as he assaulted one of them.
The trio was represented by Attorney Patrice Henry, who made an application for reasonable bail. He stated that his clients are employees of a Chinese store in Georgetown and on the day, the virtual complainant went into the store, picked up an item and attempted to walk out without paying.
The attorney went on to say that Zhen confronted Singh which resulted in a scuffle.
Singh was placed on $10,000 bail whilst the three Chinese nationals were placed on $30,000 bail each. The matters will be called again on February 25.
