I'm just about done reading this fantastic little book co-authored by one of my former Profs Joseph Heath. It's a great read if you've ever thought about consumerism and the various counter-culture movements since the 60's that have tried to defeat or diminish it. There is one chapter in particular (which is worth the price of the whole book alone) entitled "I hate myself and I want to buy" which completely deconstructs the counter-culture idea that corporate advertising and unbridled capitalism is responsible for the rampant consumerism and competitive consumption in North America.
I've also purchased another book by Prof Heath entitled "Filthy Lucre" which (according the back cover synopsis) attempts to skewer 6 favourite economic fallacies of the right wingers and 6 of the left wingers.
