York U football coach charged in child-luring case

A 24-year-old York University football coach is facing child luring and child porn-related charges, Toronto police say.

Police said charges were laid after a suspect became involved in cellphone and Internet chats with a 16-year-old boy between December and February.

Using his cellphone, the victim sent images of himself to the accused, according to police.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims.

Daniel Younis is charged with luring a child under 18 and attempting to make child pornography, police said Friday.

At the time of the arrest, Younis was the recruiting co-ordinator and running backs coach for the York University Lions football team. He joined the team's coaching staff after the 2010 season.
In a statement, York University said it has suspended its relationship with Younis, pending the outcome of the police investigation.
“We are extremely disturbed about this very serious allegation and are working closely with the TPS in support of their investigation,” the university said. "Our first priority is to fully support students and prospective students, which includes ensuring they have full access to qualified support services."
The university said Younis was a volunteer coach.
Before joining York University, Younis spent three seasons as an offensive line coach and in-season recruiting coach for the University of Toronto’s football team.
According to a profile that was posted on the York University Lions’ website, Younis once coached the offensive line for the Etobicoke Eagles, starting in 2007, before taking over as that team's offensive co-ordinator in 2009.
He has previously served as the defensive co-ordinator for Team Canada, according to the profile.
