UAE residents bite into Kim Kardashian’s crazy beauty treatment: Vampire Facelifts
New secret to glowing skin has found many takers in the emirates

The epic love story between Edward and Bella may have finally seen its ‘Twilight’, but the dawn is still breaking on the vampire fixation it has left in its wake, with the UAE being the latest to bite into this trend.


‘Vampire Facelifts’ are all the rage in Hollywood today, with last month’s prestigious Oscars ceremony also turning into an unlikely endorser when the Academy’s $45,000 worth of goody bags for the nominees included this particular treat, which has in the past been lent credibility by reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

So what’s so vampire-like about this particular treatment, you ask? Try injecting your face with a shot of blood.

Dr Roberto Viel at the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery explained it further saying: “The treatment goes by a less controversial name, being the Platelet Rich Plasma therapy or simply PRP. The treatment is ideally used for skin rejuvenation, which follows the theory that one’s own blood can be used to stimulate the skin and give your face a glowing lift.”
Dr Viel, who has been practicing this treatment over five years in Dubai, says that the treatment attracts many from the local expat community, along with many Gulf Arabs who are looking for a more natural way of regaining their beauty.
Ideally, anywhere between 20ml to 60ml of blood is extracted from another part of your body and then injected into the face, after it undergoes a centrifuge treatment whereby the platelets are separated from the red blood cells.
The platelets are then blended with a fibrin mixture and injected just below the surface of the skin.
“This process stimulates the growth factors when injected, which produces the growth in collage that plumps up skin that is tired and sagging,” explained Dr Viel.
Err, right.
However, Dr Viel says the procedure may be new to the UAE but is a standard practice with celebs in London and Los Angeles.
For those worried about the pain need not fret as an anaesthesia cream is applied to the face 30 minutes prior to the procedure itself, which numbs the muscles, so you shouldn’t feel a thing. For those who are still squirmy, can be administered a general anaesthesia too.
But you may want to consider popping out during your one-hour office lunch break just yet.
“Sometimes the injections can cause subtle bruising under the skin, so you might consider a downtime for the day; but each patient is different,” he said.
Results can take a few weeks to show, with the “visibly younger looking skin” lasting up to eight months if not more.
“We have quite a number of women in their mid 30s and up signing up for this treatment these days,” admitted Dr Viel. “In fact, we even have some male clientele. Everyone wants to look good these days.”
The novelty of anything vampire-ish is not so cheap, with the average treatment ranging between Dh3,500 and Dh4,000; however, when compared to the $5,000 you can sometimes fork over in Los Angeles, the UAE is a bargain.
