THE Panday family yesterday officially opened two theatres in the spanking new Avinash Entertainment Complex on Water Street, Georgetown. When completed, the complex will boast six cinemas.
The theatres, named Kara and Nash, are both state-of-the-art facilities, fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern technologies needed to project movies at a good quality.
According to Harry Panday, another four theatres will be opened in the next few months, two more indoor theaters, including a three dimensional (3D) movie theatre, and an outdoor drive-in cinema on the tarmac. Patrons here will be able to have dinner and view a film.
“We have at this Avinash Entertainment Complex, existing right now, two movie theatres which have shows on as we speak and the 3D movie theatre is in the making and it should have shows sometime in the latter part of next week,” he advised.
He noted that the buildings for the other indoor theatres already exist and that it is just a matter of setting them up for use.
In addition, he stated that a stage is currently being constructed which will facilitate live shows and there will also be a stadium and pavilion overlooking the stage.
Panday revealed that the two theatres now functioning, each has the seating capacity to accommodate 235 persons. According to him, the other theatres will each accommodate approximately 300 persons.
Additionally, he disclosed that the seating capacity of the pavilion is about 200, while the other stadium-type pavilion will accommodate another 300 persons. He further noted that the car park has the capacity to take in approximately 120-130 cars.
“That’s a lot of seating and capacity for movies and a total of six movie theatres showing at the same time,” he added.
Some parts of the complex are still under construction and Panday advised that by April next year, another two movie theatres will be opened, along with a shopping mall, a disco, a bowling alley and a roof garden which will overlook the Demerara river and the Atlantic Ocean.
When asked about security measures in place for the complex, Panday assured that presently there is no sign of any security risks. He stressed that if such situation should arise, they will employ special security guards to patrol the street, if that is necessary.
“We cannot and will not cause patrons to be at risk. Whatever security measures are needed we will absolutely, regardless of the cost, take care of that, because the intention here is clean, secure entertainment,” he asserted.
Moreover, he noted that the project should be totally completed in the next two years, and at the end of this period, he projected that approximately 700 persons will be employed. However, he added that that figure is just for the entertainment aspect of the complex and that another few hundred persons will be employed in the shopping mall.
Admission to the theatres is $500 for adults and $300 for children.
