West Indies cricket 2013 in review

West Indies started of the year 6 test wins in a row ..a sign of promise.

In  seven Tests, they lost by an innings three times

ODI record 24 matches ....winning 9,  losing 16..

T20....3 wins 2 losses

Lets look at the team players and Coach ..

The Darren Sammy-Ottis Gibson captain-coach combination that  committed cricket from players in 2012, did not do the same in 2013.
Darren Bravo's departure for "personal reasons" still unexplained.
Comments about a lack of team unity by his brother, ODI skipper Dwayne, when he joined the tour, pointed to a team in crisis.
Sammy,Gibson combo  in many respects, sounded like two men who had reached their limits.

Chanderpaul, now past 11,000 Test runs, maintained his level of performance,

Sunil Narine in ODIs and T20s. A six-wicket haul in his only Test of the year .

Darren Bravo in the ODIs,  one century and six fifties.
His double-century in the Dunedin Test was the highlight of his Test match run
However, two failures followed in Wellington.

Wicketkeeper-batsman  Denesh Ramdin century under pressure in the final
Test against New Zealand had a  healthy average of 45.55 for the year.
Three centuries in the last 18 months .

Test and one-day formats Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.

Gayle averaged 19-plus in an ODI season, and in the four Tests he played before a
hamstring injury curtailed his year, he averaged 40.
His quick exits put extra pressure on  - Powell in the Tests, Johnson Charles in the
ODIs, and Darren Bravo in both formats.

Samuels, so outstanding for his focus in 2012, had  an eye injury. He did not seem to
have the same resolve as in 2012.A chronic wrist problem, an he left the New Zealand tour
ahead of the limited-overs series. he is almost 33 years old.
The motivation he seemed to lack in 2013 will it return in  2014?.

Shane Shillingford's offspin; and subsequent suspension from international cricket.

Roach and Ravi Rampaul,  could not stay fit enough to share the new ball
Rampaul was either unavailable because of injury
Roach managed just the two Tests against Zimbabwe

Pollard started strongly in the ODI series in Australia, but faded before injury ended his season .
His made six scores of 0 in 17 one-day innings.

Andre Russell's played only four ODIs and three T20s all year.

Dwayne Bravo tried to bring enthusiasm  to the one-day captaincy, but problems getting runs.

Sammy's allrounder's spot remained under scrutiny, lack of runs and wickets.

Introduced fast bowler Shannon Gabriel on the 2012 tour of England, a back injury.
Promising effort against Zimbabwe in two Tests,  he was out of the side for the
final Test against New Zealand.

Kieran Powell, the Nevisian opener who had put together three centuries in 2012 , in
2013, ending it averaging an unsatisfactory 20.00.

The above shows our problems , Can the WICB see them.

* As long as Otis Gibson is coach and Clyde Butts is chief selector----the West Indies must never win a test or one day series.

* Right now I am only interested in individual performances.

* And I don't support the West Indies in onedayers.

Rev,

I always find you do a disservice to Shivnarine Chanderpaul when you focus on his personal efforts with no reference to the team.

Also when SC outlines his objectives he never really talk about the team and him influencing the results or changing the fortunes of the team.

So perhaps you are just doing what he is planning anyway.

* Who gives a rat's a$$ about the West Indies team under Gibson ?

* Surely not the Rev.

* Listen!  We are all entitled to our opinions

* If you agree with the Rev's opinions---COOL!

* If you disagree---no problem.

RE: SHIV

* He is the only player on the WI worth talking about----he puts up the numbers----and those numbers interest me---and that's all that matters.

Rev,

I now know your perspective and emphasis so I choose to either ignore or contribute to your posts. In the main I choose to ignore them and you are right we are entitled to our opinions.

Perhaps yours and Chanderpaul's objectives are synchronized as neither talks about the team which seems to justify the criticisms that come his way about selfishness. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is a senior player and he should be talking and aiming to guide his team, even if Gibson or John Smith is Coach.

I have no disrespect for SC but great players play for their teams.

All he talked about in his latest interview is his personal goals.

However I have much respect for his numbers.

* What nonsense are you talking ?

* Are you implying Shiv does not play for his team ?

* Then which team does he play for ?

I do not know your players and Cricket that well to name a team but it appears a no brainer when it comes to Shivnarine Chanderpaul's exclusion from the ODI team.

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0
