Samuels recovering at home from wrist surgery

WEST Indies' Jamaican middle order batsman Marlon Samuels is now at home recovering from surgery on a chronic right-wrist injury which forced him to return to the Caribbean late last month from the ongoing West Indies tour of New Zealand.

At the time of Samuels' departure from New Zealand, West Indies team physiotherapist C J Clark said: "It will require surgery management and he returns home to seek that surgical opinion and advice from the West Indies Cricket Board's medical panel, headed by Dr Akshai Mansingh."

The Jamaica Observer understands that the surgery, done by Dr Mansingh, was done last Friday to correct a bone growth on the wrist, which appeared to have gone well.

West Indies head coach Otis Gibson had said that the loss of Samuels was a major setback to the regional side seeking to rebound from a series of losses.

"Marlon's injury is unfortunate at such a tough time for the team," declared Gibson. "But it gives another player the opportunity to make a name for himself in this series."

Samuels, the right-arm offbreak bowler, was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) a few years ago, and was recently sanctioned for his bowling action.

The 32-year-old player has played in 100 first-class matches, recording 12 centuries and 36 half centuries at an average of 32.39, while taking 64 wickets.

His career for the regional side has so far seen him play 51 Test matches with five centuries and 20 half centuries, to go along with 34 wickets. His record in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) stands at 157 matches with five centuries and 23 half centuries, while taking 80 wickets.

In T20 internationals he has taken part in 25 games, amassing six half centuries and taking 14 wickets.

Samuels also led the Antigua Hawksbill in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20.

No date has yet been set for the player to return to pitch, but sources close to him explained that after the healing process, the player will have to undergo physical therapy.
