St Lucians shocked at Sammy's decision to quit — PM Anthony

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — Prime Minister Kenny Anthony says many St Lucians were shocked by the decision of countryman Darren Sammy to announce his retirement from Test cricket.

Sammy called it a day from the longer format of the sport shortly after West Indies selectors removed him after a near four-year reign as captain.

Selectors have replaced him with the Trinidad and Tobago wicketkeeper, Denesh Ramdin, who will lead the regional side in the upcoming New Zealand series.

"Darren Sammy's announcement of his retirement from Test Cricket was sudden," Prime Minister Anthony said in a government release.

"While it may not have been an unexpected decision for many cricket enthusiasts, it was indeed a shock to many Saint Lucians."

The St Lucian leader praised Sammy's humility and enthusiasm as attributes which he said should be emulated.

Prime Minister Anthony complimented Sammy for taking on the role of West Indies captain during a period of disarray in the regional side.

The St Lucian all-rounder has often been credited with uniting the squad and returning stability and discipline.

"He brought comfort that as West Indians we can be proud of our identity, our history and our class in all endeavours," said Anthony.

"He was given the most unenviable task and he never shirked, complained or shied from the responsibilities or consequences of his leadership".

Sammy led West Indies in 30 of his 38 Tests, managing eight wins, 12 losses and 10 draws.

"It is ironic that West Indies Test Cricket has lost Darren at a time when he is the only West Indian to feature in the Reliance Top 10 test ranking for all rounders," the Prime Minister pointed out.

"Nevertheless, as a government, we respect the decisions of the West Indies Cricket Board and that of Darren Sammy," Prime Minister Anthony went on.

Sammy is an average player with good manners; that's all. He and most of the present crop of players could not make a WI 3rd eleven in the 80s

Let's look at Sammy's last 2 series

WI in India - 2 tests
Batting - Sammy's scores were 16,8,0,1
Bowling - 21 overs, 93 runs, 0 wickets
The WI bowlers bowled 237 overs so Sammy bowled 9% of those overs.

WI in New Zealand - 3 tests
Batting - Sammy's scores were 27no, 80,0,0,3,24. Avg of 26.80
Bowling - 80 overs, 261 runs, 7wkts. Avg of 37.29
The WI bowlers bowled 454 overs so Sammy bowled 15.6% of those overs.

Those numbers are just not good enough. In India he did very little bowling and contributed nothing with the bat.

In NZ WI were destroyed by the NZ pacers. Here was the opportunity for Sammy in conditions favorable for pace bowling. 7 wickets at 37.29 is just not good enough and only bowling 15% of the total WI overs.

Kenny Anthony would be better off dealing with the shyte that going on in his Island.

A lot of the "disarray" was engendered by his own Lucians at the helm - Hilaire in particular.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team.
