Melbourne Renegades sign powerful West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell

A fast bowler and power-hitter, Russell will join Windies teammate Dwayne Bravo during the first half of the Big Bash League before both depart to join the West Indian squad for its World Cup preparations.

Both will play in the derby against the Melbourne Stars at Etihad Stadium on January 3, with the possibility of making the next game, against Hobart on January 7.

Big-hitting Kiwi Jesse Ryder will arrive for the back half of the tournament, with another replacement player also in the pipeline.

Russell is a regular for the Windies in short-format cricket, having played 38 one-day internationals and 30 Twenty20 internationals.

"I'm really looking forward to getting to Australia and playing a key role for the Melbourne Renegades this season," Russell said.

"The Renegades have a talented squad this year with a good mix of big hitters and great bowlers so I want to contribute to the team in both areas this season.

"The Melbourne crowds are well-known for being passionate about sport and I'm excited to experience that atmosphere at Etihad Stadium."

Renegades coach Simon Helmot was excited to have another all-round option in his squad.

"We've got some really solid batting talent across the line-up and we were keen to add an explosive all-rounder within our squad.

"Andre fits that bill and increases our bowling options with the likes of Peter Siddle, Nathan Rimmington, Fawad Ahmed, Aaron O'Brien and James Pattinson as he continues his return from injury."
