Narine too much for Clarke Rd in Sunday League

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Queen’s Park Cricket Club just had too much firepower for defending champions Clarke Road yesterday in the opening round of Premier Division One matches in the 50-over Sunday League competition.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine, who withdrew from the West Indies World Cup squad last week to do more remedial work on his bowling action, proved a headache for the Clarke Road batsmen at the Queen’s Park Oval as the champs lost by five wickets.

Choosing to bat first against a Queen’s Park side that included West Indies players Narine, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Shannon Gabriel, Clarke Road tumbled to 163 all out in 41 overs to Narine, who took four wickets for 21 runs in his eight overs, and former WI Test spinner Amit Jaggernauth (three for 43).

In reply, Queen’s Park lost four wickets in reaching their straightforward target, with national all-rounder Yannic Cariah leading the way at the top of the innings with 60 which included six fours and a six. He and national opener Jeremy Solozano (29, three fours) set the platform with 67 for the first wicket by the 18th over before Solozano fell lbw to Mark Deyal.

Deyal eventually removed Cariah, while QPCC also lost Bravo (two), Akeal Hosein (ten) and captain Pollard (21) before Kevon Cooper with an unbeaten run-a-ball 22 and Narine (nine not out) saw them home.
