CEO of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA) Derrick Nicholas said chief amongst the discussions during the board’s meeting slated for Saturday, will be the methods employed by both the head coach and chief selector during the WICB’s Professional Cricket League (PCL) draft held in October of last year.

According to Nicholas, both the coach (Ridley Jacobs) and chief selector (Lawrence Carty) failed to carry out specific instructions on which players they should have selected in the draft.

“A player (Ramnaresh Sarwan) was even mentioned by name that we would have liked to acquire his services and we had from opening batsman, top order coming all the way down to bowling in terms of spin bowler, left-arm seamer. We even went as far as saying options one two and three in the event that when your time comes and option one was no longer available …” he said.

The CEO went on to hint that action could be taken against some during the anticipated Board meeting to be held in St Kitts.

“All of those questions and the persons who went to the draft and did not follow the mandate of the board will have to answer to the full board. I know there is going to be a decision where that is concerned and two schools of thought are being tossed around right now and I am pretty confident as to which way the board is going to go on this matter. The board meeting is on Saturday,” Nicholas said.

Head coach Ridley Jacobs, has however denied Nicholas’s claims that he and Carty had received instructions going into the PCL draft.

“Derrick must understand that he must speak the truth because there was no information given to us and when we got to Barbados was when we started seeking information and started asking questions so I don’t know what Derrick is talking about,” he said.

No player from outside of the Leewards was selected during the draft that was held in Barbados.

these gentlemen totally failed their cricket, how can you stand pat with much better players available. Mr jacobs knew better players were there to be drafted but his mindset is still in the past. Hopefully the next draft they wake up.

The demise of WI cricket and the talent started with the reduction of foreign players in the English County cricket competition. The slide started back in the early 90's when the quota system changed reducing the overseas players per side. What WI cricketers lost was the ability to play with and gain experiences from the best cricketers the world over under different conditions. This experiences kept the skill pool sharp and replenished. The introduction of the PCL and the current format is a good start for the revitalization of cricket in the Caribbean. However, unless the PCL include the best foreign players there will be no improvement in WI cricket. Another consideration that must be made immediately is the upgrade of the pitches to pre 90's level. I also see a need to change the board replacing the current flock with competent strategic thinking leaders instead of the current flock.
