Michael Vaughan is the leading candidate to become England's new director of cricket after Paul Downton was sacked by the ECB.

Downton, who was appointed as managing director in February last year and decided to banish Kevin Pietersen from the team, was dismissed on Wednesday evening when the ECB's new chief executive Tom Harrison announced a dramatic overhaul of the team's management structure.

James Whitaker, the national selector, is expected to be sacked when Harrison presents his review of England humiliating World Cup failure to the ECB board at Lord's on Thursday.
