"I've been tested on and off the field and had to go through the ringer to get here. So, yes I feel really confident I can cope and do really well," Trott told reporters.

"I didn't know if I was going to be selected but I had to get my head down and push my case forward and that's all I could do. I'm really glad.

"It's been a little bit frustrating being stuck on 49 (Test caps) all that time but I'm really proud of what I've achieved and helped be part of so hopefully to get a 50th cap would be great."

Everybody deserves a second opportunity not everybody gets them but I'm pleased he has he comes across as a bona fide nice guy not to mention he is the nearest thing England have had to a Dravid or Chanderpaul good luck to him.

Obviously it is good to see Trott back but is anyone else concerned that he is being shoehorned to open with Cook? This is going to add a fair amount of pressure on him to succeed at a position he has no experience in.

dillinger . in my experience a lotta # 3 becomes Opener by default:

when one of the openers OUT in the first over !!!

Am sure Trott already has that exposure in the England squad  ;)

Sadly, over the last two years, that has been the case more often than not for England. Their opening pair have been a problem. Cook's numbers over the last 2 years are far below his career average and with the exception of Root, all others that have partnered with him, have failed.

In the last 2 years of Test cricket, England's opening pair have averaged 32.62 for the first wicket. From 2006-2012, Cook and Strauss averaged 40.40. For comparison, over that same period, West Indies opening pair have averaged 38.

Trott's doctor probaly recommended he play the West "dial a ton" Indies as soon as possible. We are expert at lifting the opposition's spirits.

Stating the obvious but not a good return to Test cricket for Trott. England have to figure out an opening pair. Can't keep losing early wickets and expect to win games.
