Kalawan targets place on Windies U-19 squad

Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 all-rounder Clevon Kalawan wants to have a successful Regional Under-19 tournament so he can earn a place on the West Indies youth team.

Kalawan is currently in training with Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 team that is getting ready for the West Indies Cricket Board Under-19 tournament in Jamaica later this month.

At the conclusion of the tournament the WICB will selected the West Indies team for the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be played in Bangladesh next year.

“My goals are to do my best in the tournament and try to make the West Indies Under-19 team and win a trophy with

Trinidad and Tobago.” he said in a recent interview, adding, “It was my goal two years ago when I made the national Under-19 team and now I am getting another chance so I need to make up for that and give it my all.”

The Naparime College student explained that the experience of playing at the Regional Under-19 tournament helped him identify the weak areas in his game which has improved his chances of achieving his goals.

“I have been working on my fitness. This time I have been doing more running and putting more emphasis on strengthening my core and developing my muscles. I am progressing slowly and I should be ready for the tournament. I am pleased with how my development is going but I am starting to increase the intensity,” Kalawan revealed.

The Clarke Road player explained that the squad is coming together and developing a team bond is necessary to winning the West Indies Under-19 Championships.

“The guys know each other a bit better now because we have been playing against each other in the Inter Zone tournament and with our clubs. I think we are starting to work together as a unit and trust each other.

“I think the team bond is going to be very important because we need to operate as one unit on the field to win this tournament since we are going to come up against very tough opposition,” Kalawan explained.
