Anticipation builds for Caribbean Single Wicket

The 4th edition of Caribbean Single Wicket tournament bowls off on June 29 at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre and fans are keen awaiting to see this innovative form of the game. Some of the best allrounders in the regional will be on show competing for cash prizes. Newsday profiles some of the Caribbean stars that will be participating this year

.Navin Stewart
Navin Stewart is a fast-bowling allrounder who made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago in March 2009 and picked up three wickets against Guyana.
His first two Twenty20 matches for TT were in the Stanford Super Series in October 2008 when several of the team’s regulars were playing for the Stanford Superstars.
He later seized a spot in the TT squad for the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 in India in September 2009.He has played in all editions of Caribbean Premier League T20, representing Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents this season. He is one of the most experienced players in singlewicket cricket, having appeared in all previous competitions 2009, 2013and 2014. On each occasion Stewart made the semi-finals. He knocked out tournament favourite Dwayne Bravo in the very first tournament, and then he dumped seeded players Sunil Narine and Christopher Barnwell out of the 2013 and 2014 competitions respectively. Stewart shared the award for the most sixes in the 2014 tournament with Lendl Simmons

Kevon Cooper
Kevon Cooper is a medium-pace bowling allrounder from Trinidad and Tobago. He has played mainly Twenty20s since he made his debut in the Stanford Super Series in 2008.
He has been a regular in the Red Steel Team in the Caribbean Premier League T20 since it started in 2013. He also performed creditably in the Nagico Super 50 in 2014. Kevon has appeared in one singlewicket competition after he returned from a stint in the Indian Premier League in 2013. .He was one of four seeded players but he did not make it into the semi-final (knockout) stage. Cooper, Christopher Barnwell and Evin Lewis competed in the group of death.
Barnwell bested Cooper in one of the most memorable matches of that tournament to advance to the semis. Cooper missed the 2014 tournament because of injury but he will be in the fray in this event.

Narsingh Deonarine
Narsingh Deonarine is a compact middle order batsman and off spin bowler who has represented Guyana and West Indies. He made his Test debut against South Africa, in March 2005.
Two years later, he almost snatched a spot in the West Indies’ Twenty20 squad for the inaugural World Championship, but didn’t make the final squad.
He remained consistent in the domestic game and was the overall leading run-scorer in the 2008-09 regional four-day competition with 1068 runs. Deonarine has played in all editions of CPL T20 and has one appearance in the Caribbean Singlewicket Cricket Tournament 2014.
He played in a group with Richard Kelly and defending champion Dwayne Smith the eventual winner of the group.
Deonarine is in peak form campaigning with Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL T20 and should perform better in the tournament on Wednesday 29th July.
