Pietersen on Clive Rice: "He was a father figure to me"

Kevin Pietersen says former South Africa and Notts captain Clive Rice, who has died aged 66, was a "father figure" to him.

Rice, then Nottinghamshire coach, brought Pietersen to the UK in 2000, and played a crucial role in developing his talent as a batsman.

Pietersen describes how Rice and his wife took him under their wing when he arrived in Britain, and gave him confidence he needed to make it at the highest level.

Pietersen, who had focused more on his bowling at the start of his career, said: "He saw in me more than I saw in myself. He gave me the confidence, ability and opportunity to fulfil a talent I didn't know I had."

Rice, who was treated for his tumour in India in March, died in a hospital in Cape Town. He played 482 first-class matches, for sides including Transvaal, Natal and Nottinghamshire, between 1969 and 1994. He was Nottinghamshire coach from 1999 to 2002.
