Liam Plunkett: Yorkshire give England fast bowler one-year contract extension

Yorkshire paceman Liam Plunkett has signed a one-year contract extension with the Headingley side until 2018.

The 32-year-old England bowler, who joined Yorkshire in 2012, has taken 41 wickets in 13 Tests for his country.

The former Durham man has also taken 73 wickets in 49 one-day internationals and 13 in 11 T20 internationals.

"I love Yorkshire, the surrounding area and the passion the people here have for cricket," he told the club's official website.

"I've got a bit of a niggle at the moment, but hopefully I'll be back fighting fit in the next couple of weeks and I'm very much looking forward to putting the whites back on and getting back out there for Yorkshire."

Liam Plunkett is one of those players that tends not to be in the spotlight too much, and ask any cricket fan and they won't have much of an opinion on him one way or another. While he isn't a bad player he isn't going to go down as one of the greats of the game, and if and when he does retire I think he may soon be forgotten.

That might sound a bit harsh on Plunkett, but I think that even he will say that while he's had a good career, it's not reached the heights of say what a Joe Root is going to go on to achieve. I'm pleased he's been given a contract extension from Yorkshire as I think he deserves it, but looking to the future, if I was a Yorkshire fan, then I would maybe be looking at more exciting prospects to take his place when that contract does come to an end.

Not all the players that are part of a team get to be a star, and as you mention it here @pwarbi, this is the case with Plunkett, but many times what's happening of the pitch also plays an important role in the team spirits and motivation, so maybe Liam plays an important role in that aspect?
