Cricket today doesn't truly represent the same competition it once were. The game today is not played equally with bat and ball but rather favoring the bat. Cricketers from the 2000 and prior had to work much harder to score runs. Parameters are in place to make batsmen of today's game score bigger and faster innings, without actually being better players. Cricketers 25 years ago or prior had limited options to score in comparison to today. Runs scored or innings played 25 ago, were of greater value. Capil Dev 175 or Sir Viv 184 were played under much harsher conditions, than recent ones, which make them better and more valuable. If Dev had capitalized on 10 free hits from 10 no balls during his 175, or from 12 wides had to be rebowled. His innings 175 would have a different story. Perhaps 300 instead. What if sir Vivian Richards who was the most destructive batsman ever, had the luxury of 12 no balls free hits to score from? Or the reloading 20 wide balls, wether leg side wide or short balls wide, his 184 might have well been 350.
For me to rate Glenn Maxwell 201 as the greatest World Cup Innings above Capil Dev 175, or above Sir Vivian Richards 184 would be very wild, and lacking of true historical values. Maxwell has all of the ammunitions to score big, much more than Capil Dev and Sir Vivian Richards had. A keen student of the game will always exercise greatest prudence in favor of the former innings.
