He made 27 runs during the 1983 World Cup final, which was golden in the context of the low-scoring game for India, which they won by beating the reigning champions. He made his entrance into ODI cricket, winning the man of the match award in his debut game against Australia in 1980, scoring 64 runs.
He had scored four Test centuries in his career. Out of those two stands out. First one was his 174 in Adelaide during the 1980/81 tour, which he scored after he collapsed on the ground during the previous game, where he got hit by a bouncer from Len Pascoe.
The second knock came during the Old Trafford Test in 1982, where he made a match-saving unbeaten 129. During this inning, he hit six boundaries off a Bob Willis over.
Apart from his career as a cricketer, he later became a coach, and at the international level, he took Kenya to the semifinal of the 2003 World Cup and even starred in a Bollywood movie immediately after the 1983 World Cup triumph. Unfortunately, it wasn't a career that he was successful in.
Here's wishing a very happy 69th birthday to former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil.
