Milton Small’s story is one of those quiet chapters in West Indies cricket — a tale shaped as much by timing as by talent. In an era overflowing with fearsome fast bowlers, breaking into that legendary pace attack was never easy. Tall and slightly gangly at the crease, Small brought an awkward rhythm to his run-up, yet he possessed a valuable skill: the ability to swing the ball sharply back into the right-hander. He wasn’t express pace in the mould of some of his celebrated teammates, but he was effective, disciplined, and always ready when called upon.
His Test career was brief, stretching across just two appearances, yet it carried a memorable moment. At Lord’s, in what would become his final Test, Small was handed the new ball — remarkably, ahead of the great Malcolm Marshall.
Today, as Milton Small turns 62, it’s a fitting moment to look back on a cricketer whose journey reflects both the fierce competition and the immense depth of West Indies fast bowling during one of the game’s most iconic eras. Here’s wishing him a very happy birthday.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
