(CRICBUZZ)The International Cricket Council have confirmed that their Anti-Corruption Unit is investigating an incident in Zimbabwe following reports of an attempt to influence the recent Test series between Zimbabwe and West Indies.
A report in NewsDay, a local newspaper in Zimbabwe, said that Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer had rebuffed an approach by a former Zimbabwe Cricket board member to fix elements of the Test series.
"While we do not comment on the specifics of ACU investigations while they are underway, I can confirm that an investigation is underway in Zimbabwe," an ICC spokesperson said.
Cricbuzz understands that Cremer was approached by the former board member prior to the Test series, but contrary to what was initially reported, no specific figure was offered in return for manipulating the matches.
Cremer immediately informed coach Heath Streak of the exchange, and the matter was elevated through ZC to the ICC. Zimbabwe went on to lose the series 1-0.
It is the second time in the past four weeks that news of an approach to an international captain has come to light. Last month an approach to Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed during their one-day international series against Sri Lanka led to an ICC investigation.
The ACU is also busy investigating Indian curator Pandurang Salgaoncar, who was caught up in a sting operation by a television news channel ahead of the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Pune.
