Workers of the decades-old Wales Sugar Estate, West Bank Demerara and their families cried early Sunday morning when they heard the sounding of the horn that signalled the closing of the estate.
To date, neither the government nor the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has given the hundreds of Wales workers who are now without jobs
The sugar industry is the largest single employer in Guyana and the main driver of its GDP. These proposed cuts to the industry threaten its overall well-being and will put the entire industry at risk and with it workers’ livelihoods and the survival of surrounding communities.

Rubbish! The sugar industry is the largest financial drain on the country. The daily losses exceed the income by quite a margin. It is unsustainable to keep running a negative balance of payment.

I am always amazed how so many Guyanese still believe that pissing in the wind won't make you wet. The world has been slowly decreasing its use of sugar. Even Coca Cola promised to reduce the sugar in its drinks. The case for keep paying Guyanese sugar workers such a high salary in return for making a loss has been nothing short of a disaster. Hopefully more closures will follow.
As for Kwami's suggestion that it cannot be justified: just look at that dumb niger blaming black people for the failure of the coolies to produce enough cane to justify their wages. Under the PPP many canecutters just collected their monthly wages without cutting as much as a single cane. They have been milking the country. Now they can use their cutlass to become bandits.
Heavy flooding in East Berbice yesterday, which some residents feel was exacerbated by a broken dam, put a damper on the Christmas spirit, leaving many residents confined to their homes.
