Study Finds More Than Half Of U.S. Public School Children From Poor Families

More than half of the children attending U.S. public schools come from low income backgrounds, according to a new study by the Southern Education Foundation.

Using data collected from the National Center for Education Statistics, the group found 51% of public school students from kindergarten to 12th grade qualify for the federal program that provides free or subsidized lunches to students from families living in poverty or near-poverty.

The SEF said the rate of poor students in public schools hasn’t been higher in more than half a century, calling its findings “a defining moment in America’s public education.”

In 1989, less than a third of public school students came from poor backgrounds, the SEF said, but the number has since exploded.

“In 40 of the 50 states, low income students comprised no less than 40 percent of all public schoolchildren,” the SEF said. “In 21 states, children eligible for free or reduced-price lunches were a majority of the students in 2013.”

Well, that goes without saying. Where else would you expect poor families to send their children if not to a public school. It's like having a study that finds that the majority of private school students come from wealthy families. No shit sherlock!

Mississippi has an extremely high number of private schools that popped up everywhere post Brown v. Board.  It comes as no surprise that we have the highest percentage of poor students in public school.  Virtually every middle class family has a private school option within a reasonable driving distance of home.  And due to the high number, they are often relatively cheap compared to those in other parts of the country. When your option is a failing public school system or a moderately priced private school with 98% graduation rates, many families choose to take on the financial strain of tuition to maximize their kids' opportunities.

Well, I think that people are too dependent on the school system to develop their children and why poverty is such a problem worldwide. If mothers were attuned to developing their children themselves, poverty would surely reverse and switch in percentage with wealth. The percentage that is now poverty would be wealth and is now wealth would be poverty.

So I say Kudos to all women who dedicate their lives to their children's development and even home school them. There's a few women in the world who know the deal.
:)

And hopefully, that number will increase over time.

I recently had a discussion with a Chicago Special Ed teacher and she said that the problems that many public schools face are being ignored. The government blames the teachers for the lack of better test grades (not graduation rates or grades) and don't factor in that a lot of students come poor or low income homes. Coming from these types of families factors in on how they are going to respond in class. Happy, healthy, fed children will do much better than a stressed out, hungry child.
