IN his round of swinging attacks on several persons of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Prime Ministerial candidate of the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition, Moses Nagamootoo refused to spare the PPP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Ms. Elisabeth Harper, questioning her credentials based on her domestic violence platform.
Harper, who is the former Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had detailed in an interview with former Ms. Guyana World, Olive Gopaul that the central theme of her political career would be domestic violence as she was once a victim.
According to the Prime Ministerial candidate during the interview, “Domestic violence is real in our society and me being able to tell my story, from where I came from, what I’ve become, how I did it, I feel that I could encourage women, I could also encourage interest groups in society to help to rid us of this.”
Against this backdrop, several of her speeches since her appearance in the political sphere have sought to promote a reduction in the cases of domestic violence while underscoring the importance of eradicating such a social ill.

But this genuine attempt by Harper was documented by Nagamootoo in an attempt to launch an assault, against her platform, which he did at Whim, Berbice, last Sunday evening.
Addressing the gathering at Whim, his hometown, Nagamootoo sought to urge the Berbicians not to vote for Harper at the upcoming elections, simply because they didn’t know who she was. Rather, he questioned the crowd, who responded positively if they knew who he was, while at the same time, hinting that he should be voted for based on this principle.
“Do you know me?” a confident Nagamootoo asked the people of his hometown, while receiving a positive feedback. “Do you know who Elisabeth Harper is?” he further questioned, while adding sarcastically, “Well, this Harper lady says she wants to be Prime Minister because she was a victim of domestic violence.”
Rhetorically he then questioned how was it that Harper could stand on the same platform as former President Bharat Jagdeo if she was advocating against domestic violence, thereby implying that the former president was guilty of such practices

GUYANA’s military is a professional body that has endeared itself to the Guyanese people after the pre-1992 “indecencies and excesses” under the People’s National Congress (PNC) administration. But, Dr Roger Luncheon contends that this is under threat given rising “suspicions” that are influenced by the increasing involvement of ex-military officials in the political maneuverings of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

“I do not believe that our memory is so short that when we see these two bodies getting back together again, it doesn’t reasonably raise our suspicions and causes us to wonder ‘what if’,” he said during a press conference held yesterday at Office of the President.

More correctly, it's a time for backroom deals and coalitions in a contemptible attempt to secure the seats of power and get some of the gravy and a slice of the pie.

None of the current "leaders" of these political parties in Guyana have the interests of Guyanese.  They rarely talk about things that matter to Guyanese such as infrastructural developments; education; heath; jobs; taxes; industry etc.  All they constantly do is cast aspersions and accuse the other of being corrupt.

This is the lasting legacy of that dictator LFS Burnham.  He brought the country to beggary, bankruptcy, and misery which it remains to this day and no one wants to change it.

VOCIFEROUS campaigning by the newest supporter of the governing party, Africo Selman, an ex-member of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), is being defended after her ‘usefulness’ was questioned by a Kaieteur News reporter.

People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) member, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, yesterday made it clear that Selman has always been able to rationalize the merits of decisions before her, against the backdrop of national interest.
alt

As such, he added that the ruling party’s leadership and members have always welcomed “with open arms” any individual or group desirous of supporting the development agenda that is advanced by the PPP/C.
Dr Ramsammy said her focus on national interest was evident as early as 2012 – a few months after the 10th Parliament was convened.
Speaking at press conference, held at Freedom House, Robb Street, Dr Ramsammy explained that in addition to controlling the majority in the National Assembly, the political opposition fought to control the majority on the Parliamentary Management Committee, which has always had equal representation.
“I made a passionate plea,” he said, adding that Selman was the only one from the opposition benches to agree with him.
According to him, Selman was consequently replaced as sitting member of the Parliamentary Management Committee at its next meeting.
“She was a voice of reason,” Dr Ramsammy said.
Additionally, following her departure from APNU, Selman detailed, in an explosive interview, the deliberate sabotage of Guyana’s development by the political opposition parties, now the Alliance of APNU and the Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC).
The former APNU MP has since been seen on the campaign trail, advancing the agenda of the PPP/C.
Her debut was at a public meeting held at Yarrowkabra. One of several speakers, Selman was pictured there in a red shirt (red being the PPP/C signature colour) and received a rousing welcome from PPP/C supporters. Her most recent appearance was at Sunday’s official launch of the PPP/C 2015 election campaign at Kitty, where she also spoke and received welcoming cheers from party supporters.
Photographs of appearances on the PPP/C campaign trail have since been circulated on social media, where she has also been endorsed. Her former colleague party member, James Bond, was one of the many who expressed support for her. “All the best Africo,” he said on the popular social media site, Facebook.
