“THE promises of Mr David Granger on the sugar sector and the Amaila Falls Hydropower project represent a transparent electioneering gimmick that I am confident will not fool the Guyanese people.â€Strong words from a resolute President Donald Ramotar, who, in an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, minced no words in responding to sentiments expressed by Granger at the Guyana Manufacturing Services Association (GMSA) luncheon on Tuesday.
The presidential candidate of the Alliance of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) speaking to GMSA stakeholders said, “We will also develop hydroelectric power within a project which we have identified as the Potaro Basin Development Authority which could embody the present Amaila Falls.â€
On the question of the sugar sector, he added, “We are not going to throw the sugar industry through the window…there is no quick fix, but we are not going to dissolve the sugar industry… it is too big to fail.

Dear Editor,
I wish to add a comment on the late President, Dr Cheddi Jagan, primarily to endorse an aspect of what Ralph Ramkarran, Nadira Jagan, Dr Tulsi Singh and Oscar Ramjeet have written in recent days.
I have, over the years, been a critic of the Marxist politics of Cheddi and his flaws as a statesman, which culminated in his taking Guyana into the Cold War on the side of the Soviet Union. It was the latter that prolonged the regime of Forbes Burnham by retaining the support of the United States Government (starting with President Johnson) for his infamous policy of rigging elections.
However, I have maintained that Cheddi’s resolve and seminal role in shaping the anti-colonial culture of Guyana are inviolable. This was arguably the principal factor in stimulating Sir Jock Campbell’s reforms on the sugar plantations from the 1950s. I also believe that Cheddi was the most selfless leader in the history of Guyana and the region as a whole. I recall my friend, Dr Fenton Ramsahoye, saying to me, time and again, that Cheddi’s incorruptibility was his greatest attribute. Fenton was his Attorney General from 1961 to 1964, and although he had problems with Dr Jagan’s political philosophy, he has never wavered in his assertion that Cheddi never stole a cent of the people’s money.
I recall, also, Professor David Dabydeen relating to me how Cheddi (after he became President in 1992) would take circuitous routes to conferences, enduring much physical discomfort, in order to procure the cheapest air-fares possible.
Cheddi Jagan made many political mistakes, but he belonged to a very small minority of honourable people to follow the political vocation. For over 50 years, he never sought to enrich himself or his family. He would not be proud of several of those who evoke his name today – pursuing an agenda that diverges significantly from his life of service fed by his Marxist vision.

Yours faithfully,
Clem Seecharan

Like Cheddi's marxism or not...and I too disagree with him on that.
However, no one in their right mind can disagree that Cheddi was a decent human being who gave selflessly to the people (all race and colors) of Guyana.
Excellent article by Clem.

wrong, wrong,wrong and wrong.
marxism remains a standard mark on human social achievement and development. intellectual and practical marxism has advanced human skill and experience in nature. as a foundation is has sparked much development on that base and set norms for investigation of society and social progress.
marxism as social science/sociology remains as useful currently as it was from the start
state capitalist USSR died, sabotaged by insane Mikhail...who sits now in pontification that that was the worse thing that could have happened, for it left the USA as the uncontested superpower free to do its deviltry on the world. but he is the prick who made it happen. it did not have to be the way it unfolded.
Indians like all humans are the product of social experience. there are indian radicals as true and complete as Malcolm X was.. and MLK was becoming. there is radical political opposition in capitalist India as well. we don't hear about them often, but they have been and are there...active and participatory in whatever form.
social/environmental experience changes for Indians they will adjust and become whatever is required for survival..or die! they will adjust like all humans can and will
JFK might have warned..and politically Jagan's position at the time was suicidal..BUT NOT WRONG! the forces that made Jagan's political suicide were/are wrong. but raw naked force made such as JFK 'right' but that wont endure... and Jagan's rightness will endure and prevail in time...eternally right.
