RICE flour’s reintroduction to Guyana was touted at yesterday’s rice conference, while nothing new was put forward, there were no forward-thinking initiatives that were advanced and current concerns of sector stakeholders were not addressed. “It was a talk shop for the sake of fulfilling a promise made by APNU+AFC in their 100-day plan,†said Head of the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association (RPA), Dharamkumar Seeraj.Indeed, the forum was a fulfillment of a promise by the APNU+AFC coalition in its 100-day plan to come up with solutions to address challenges confronting the rice industry.
RICE FLOURHowever, Seeraj contends that no solutions were proffered.[color=rgb(153, 153, 153)] “What we did was new repeats the old idea of rice flour and speakers addressing the nutritional value of rice flour,†he said. [/color]</blockquote>Dharamkumar SeerajNewly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), Claude Housty, in taking up rice flour’s national value said, “It has a higher digestable protein content, low calories and high fiber….if you get health conscious go to rice flour, don’t worry with wheat.â€Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, George Jervis said, “As regards the blending of rice flour and wheaten flour, it is under active consideration and I can tell you the discussions are ongoing.â€Seeraj warned that considering Guyana’s history, with the banning of wheat flour and other food items under the former People’s National Congress (PNC) administration pre-1992, the suggestion is a ticklish one.
NOTHING NEWMinister of Agriculture, Noel HolderAccording to the RPA Head, initiatives that were addressed, including the establishment of an Agriculture Bank, were ideas advanced under the former government.[color=rgb(153, 153, 153)][/size]“There was nothing new. More importantly, nothing was said about the payment to rice farmers, the tonnes of rice and paddy sitting in containers at the wharf, stocks that may been to be repackaged and treated for possible pests sooner rather than later, and nothing about the fact that we have a large crop coming in and mills still have large stocks on their hand,†Seeraj lamented. [/color]</blockquote>He stressed that paying mere lip service to supporting a critical pillar of Guyana’s economy will not “cut it†if the rice sector is to continue on the trajectory of growth and progress.
CRISIS EXISTSPresident David GrangerThe RPA Head also stated that he disagreed with statements made by President David Granger that the industry is not in crisis.The Head of State said yesterday that the industry remand “bright†and is one that is “too big to fail†– irrespective of its challenges.“Questions were asked and we got no answers. When are farmers going to be paid? Will they be paid the $9,000 per bag that Minister Khemraj Ramjattan promised? When will the containers of rice and paddy be shipped and if it will still be shipped to Venezuela? All these questions and no answers,†Seeraj said.He contends that if a crisis is not seen in the current state of affairs something is wrong.The National Rice Industry Conference themed: “Sustainable Development amid Challenges†at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre at Liliendall, Greater Georgetown.
