On the contrary I never sought to justify ppp corruption. My position was and is, if they are found guilty they should all go to jail. I don't support PPP incompetence...and I sure wont support PNC's.

That said, the PNC is appearing incompetent...nepotism is still rampant, lack of transparency in the contract dealings, problems with sugar, losing the rice markets, ramping up the noise with Venezuela...making markets that doesn't exist....going back to the hydro power that they condemned...going back on the Specialty hospital that they decried...inability to arrest crime...spending monies like it is going out of style...and having a forensic audit costing $500mm when you haven't completed and audit...you want more? Stay tuned. If you think these guys are ready for prime time then my hats off to you....

Pnc failing badly

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

That would imply that the PPP did very well. But the reality on the ground for the Guyanese back home is that the PPP did not do better, even though they had 23 years to make a positive change. And with the state of the world economy right now, the PPP left Guyana unprotected against external economic pressures.

The problem with your analysis Watooka, is everyone and their grandma was expecting a new and improved PNC-AFC coalition. That is why the voted the ppp out, remember? The PNC has failed to deliver on that mandate. And if you can honestly state that you are happy with the PNC government's performance to date, then I don't think any further rational exchange is necessary.

If you were to look at Guyana pre ppp and during ppp rule, you will have noticed that the country's development was directionally, positive. Lower external debt, growth, improvements in health care, schools and businesses. A stable dollar.

How did the ppp leave Guyana unprotected against external economic pressures? Please explain...and whilst you are at it, please also indicate how these pressures could have been
mitigated?

The current government has not been in office yet for even a year and you already saying that they have failed to deliver. Let me remind you that those kind of judgement are made at the closing stages of an administration when elections are due, not after a couple of months.
Worse still is the sense of importance that the PPP and its supporters are trying to put on the reign of the PPP, when pointing to the current government. The PPP did jack all. So we have no reference point of judgement to even accuse the government of failure. What does failure look like when comparing the previous and current government? The drugs trade? The failure of Skeldon?

I am aware that people from Berbice have been heavily affected by the smoke from the canefields and have had their vision blighted.

Saved under Regional, Guyana

GEORGETOWN – In most countries, living next door to a fire station is a comforting thought. However, the now homeless Rafeek Khan has come to learn that living right next to the Alberttown Fire Station did not guarantee that his home would be saved.

Now, Khan and his family are calling for a full investigation following Sunday morning’s blaze. The 52-year-old Khan told this newspaper that though he was not at home at the time, he was left speechless when he learnt that the fire service, stationed merely a few feet away did nothing to save his house.

He learnt that as the two storey house was being reduced to mere embers, the fire station had no fire tender or truck driver, even as neighbours frantically sought their assistance that morning.

Khan, his wife and 13-year-old son were on a trip to Region Seven at the time but three other teenagers: his son and two nephews were left at home. He said that evening neighbours saw sparks from the electrical wire leading to his house.

“The boys barely get out of the house. The wire was sparking; the neighbours said they saw blue flames coming off the wire,” Khan said.

The teenagers, he said, had already retired to bed. They were awakened by the smoke emanating from the blaze, which erupted early that morning. The homeowner said the young men “barely made it out” of the house.

“The neighbours were calling them (fire service) repeatedly but no answer. I mean we live right near to the fire station. You know we can see the station through our windows or from the verandah?” the distraught man related.

“By the time they responded, everything was already burnt,” Khan told Kaieteur News. He said that information reaching him indicated that the team that arrived to contain the blaze was from the Campbellville Fire Station.

The burnt house sits right next to the Alberttown Fire Station.
The burnt house sits right next to the Alberttown Fire Station.

The father of two related, “You know what it is to hear your house on fire and everything you work hard for gone? I had a fully furnished home; I lose millions. Now we don’t know where we living or eating. All we have left are the clothes on our backs. It can be very traumatic.”

Thankfully, Khan says a member of his church has assisted them with living quarters.

He said that a building is being developed next to him and it has been using high voltage equipment like welding machines, and since then the area has been having power surges. “When you’re watching TV and so, you notice the sudden low shedding.”

The response of the fire service, he said, was nothing short of “terrible.” Khan said: “This is gross negligence and it needs to be addressed. GPL and the power surges as well as the improper management of the equipment used are things that should be investigated. It’s a hazard.”

He complained too that a neighbour’s container has been parked near his house for quite some time, blocking a fire hydrant.

“It’s against the law to even have a car parked close to a hydrant much less something being there permanently. They couldn’t get the water to spray on the house because of this. One of my neighbours had a hose spraying from his house and at that point it was only the embers he could have sprayed on. The container blocks the hydrant.”

The Alberttown Police and Fire stations share one building at the junction of Albert and Fourth Streets, Alberttown. When Kaieteur News checked, an orange container was parked inches from the fence of that compound.

Those homeless are Rafeek, his wife Zilla, sons Yaniv and Shazad Khan; and his nephews Reno Thomas and Trevor Hohenkirk.

Reno Thomas told this publication that the occupants awoke to find their bedroom filled with smoke, but managed to escape unharmed. They were, however, unable to salvage anything.

Only Thomas and relatives, Yaniv Khan and Trevor Hohenkirk, were at home when the fire started.

While one woman expressed gratitude for the efforts by ranks of the Guyana Fire Service in containing the blaze, other
residents complained that ranks from the Alberttown Fire Station, which is located just one building away from the home, did not respond.

There are reports that the driver who operates the fire tender had called in sick and no other driver was available. The residents also made an appeal for Fire Service officials to investigate. Continuous efforts to contact Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle for an update on the situation yesterday proved futile.

I am not a ppp supporter...I never voted for the ppp. If you think that taking cheap shots at Berbicians will expunge the current government missteps then you are sadly mistaken? If you think that this type of governance meets your standard then good luck to you. The smoke in the berbicians eyes will be the least of the country's problems.

How much time do you need to quantify this government's performance? And you quickly evaded the question I asked.

Again: How did the ppp leave Guyana unprotected against external economic pressures? Please explain...and whilst you are at it, please also indicate how these pressures could have been
mitigated?

Was skeldon sugar estate blunder, heck yes. And the drug trade, who are the players? Was the government involved? If so name names. Stop pussy footing on facts.

GPL will cause APNU-AFC to lose the 2020 elections
DECEMBER 11, 2015 | BY KNEWS | FILED UNDER FEATURES / COLUMNISTS, FREDDIE KISSOON
One of the tragic mistakes the PPP made, was its refusal to read the Riot Act to state institutions, state employers and state employees who contemptuously and condescendingly mistreated, misused and humiliated the hapless, helpless people of this land.
I had a terrible experience with GPL on Tuesday morning that left my wife and daughter traumatized. But let’s digress briefly with reference to the former PPP regime. I doubt Sam Hinds, with the portfolio for GPL, ever called an emergency meeting of GPL staff – despite millions of complaints – to warn them that they cannot mistreat customers.
I believe the PPP Government never castigated the GPL staff for unprofessional behaviour, thus, GPL’s attitude never changed under the PPP. The PPP never bothered, because it couldn’t lose general elections. There is a creeping suspicion that the leadership of APNU+AFC thinks that the PPP days are over, and that the coalition will now be the people to win elections permanently. So GPL, GWI, the police etc., will never see the anger of President Granger and Prime Minister Nagamootoo
On Tuesday morning, I came back from walking my dog in the National Park, only to find the GPL disconnection crew at my gate. My wife would not have coped well if she had to do the explanation without me. Had I arrived minutes later, my electricity supply would have been suspended. I explained that I didn’t receive a December bill, and I know the due date for payment is always the first day of the month, and GPL disconnects seven days after the due date.
It meant therefore that if you add seven days to December 1, it will bring you up to December 8. But how could they cut on December 8 when you have until midnight on December 8 to pay?
It means that preparation of the documentation to disconnect will take place on December 9, and the crew will visit you on December 9. But they came the morning of December 8 to cut. Fortunately I paid Paysure before the seven days deadline. This means that had they waited until December 9, they would have seen the Paysure transmission, but they prepared their documentation before the seven days were up.
The crew was reasonable, polite and nice. They agreed that the disconnection documentation was drawn up while I still had time to pay. This happened to a customer that was never in arrears and, who for decades, always paid his GPL bills on time. This hurt my wife and she took it badly.
It was now time to complain to GPL. You cannot get through to GPL. After two hours of trying, my wife’s frustration began to affect her. She told me to put down the phone. The General Manager for customers’ service is impossible to access. His direct line is 226-8325. After two hours I got through to the disconnection department, but the gentleman told me he cannot give me the name of the supervisor.
I threatened to expose him in the media. He then told me it was Ms. Khemraj. Getting Ms. Khemraj is impossible. She wasn’t there. Half an hour after I got her, she put me on hold, and my cell phone credit was going to waste. My wife told me to hang up. I did.
Through a friend I got the extension of the manager for customers’ service. His name is Lanceford Cummings. His extension is 1514. Mr. Cummings has the quietest tone of voice for any human being I have spoken with, but Lanceford Cummings is mean-spirited. I told him I didn’t get a bill. He replied that absence of a bill should not prevent you from carrying out your obligation to pay GPL.
I explained that they came to cut before the seven days grace period was up. He said the seven days period is not a legal requirement for GPL to follow. I asked how GPL could send bills through an unreliable Post Office Corporation. He added that any change in that method is for the policy-makers. That was it. That was Lanceford Cummings.
This is GPL for you. This is Guyana for you. I watched the maudlin expression on the face of my daughter and wife. I knew I made the tragic mistake of returning to Guyana after studies abroad. My wife turned her back on top jobs in Canada to follow me to this outdoor latrine pit of a country.
She topped her class at university and won the Chemical Institute of Canada Award. Her university had secured employment with top Canadian corporations, but she followed an idealistic fool and philosophical pessimist like me back to Guyana. She and I will regret that tragedy for the rest of our lives.
