Corruption charges coming for Jagdeo …five ex-ministers of PPP

IN light of a perceived spate of police shooting to death suspected criminals, President David Granger is calling for more arrests as opposed to killings, though sometimes the latter is not preventable.Quizzed yesterday during his weekly television programme, “Public Interest”, on whether he was concerned about this trend, which seemingly reflects the inability of the police to disarm, apprehend and bring criminals to trial, the President responded in the affirmative, noting that his instruction would be to save lives.
Mr Granger noted that it is not only important to suppress crime, but also to identify and remove the causes of this social ill.

Charges against former President Bharrat Jagdeo for alleged racial incitement uttered earlier this year in the lead-up to the May 11 General and Regional elections were yesterday dismissed by Justice Navendra Singh. The charges were quashed due to the fact that particulars of the offense stated that the plaintiff did not disclose an offence which was listed in the law.

Christopher Ram The case was initially filed by Attorney-at-law Christopher Ram in April of this year after it was reported that Jagdeo had uttered offensive racial remarks in March at Babu John, Port Mourant.
Jagdeo had reportedly told the Babu John event that “They shout about racism of the PPP, but they practice racism; the whisper campaigns. In the last elections they went to some of the Afro-Guyanese villages and beat some drums at 6 o’clock in the morning and say let us throw out these coolie people. Get up, go out and vote, throw out the coolie people. That’s the kind of language they use. Anybody from our party who uses that sort of language, we will kick them out; this is our approach.”

As calls continue to be made for marijuana use to be decriminalized, President David Granger says government will contradict itself if it concedes to this given that it has already taken a position on smoking in public places and will on Thursday be tabling legislation in this regard.
“It would be quite contradictory for us to bring legislation to prohibit smoking in public places and elsewhere and to bring legislation to encourage or to decriminalise smoking of another substance,” he said during a recording of the programme, “The Public’s Interest” on Friday last.
He said the marijuana issue is one that is yet to engage the attention of the Cabinet.
