Jaguars beat Hurricanes by ten wickets

Keemo Paul claimed the final wicket of Jerimiah Louis, caught at the wicket for 16.

AFTER a defiant effort from Akeem Saunders, who stroked his maiden first class century, the Leeward Islands Hurricanes batting crumbled for a second time in three days to hand the Guyana Jaguars a ten-wicket win last evening in the seventh round Cricket West Indies (CWI) Professional Cricket League (PCL) Four-day encounter.

Trailing by 268 on first innings, the tourists were asked to follow on by the Guyana Jaguars, and were bowled out for the identical deficit, leaving the Jaguars with just one run for victory.

Akeem Saunders acknowledges his teammates after reaching his hundred.

Saunders had anchored the middle-order, putting on 91 for the fourth wicket with Shane Burton (53) and 76 for the fifth with Jahmar Hamilton (23), but when he was dismissed, the visitors’ effort unraveled and the second collapse of the match continued with increasing speed. From 127-4, the visitors lost 6-141.

It was a total bowling effort from the Jaguars, with Keemo Paul claiming 3-38, Romario Shepherd (2-33), Gudakesh Motie (2-79), Veerasammy Permaul (2-77) and Sherefane Rutherford (1-18), being the successful bowlers.
The tourists were made to follow-on after being dismissed for just 149 in reply to the Jaguars’ first innings 417.

Resuming at 114-9, 304 behind the Jaguars first innings total 417, the Hurricanes overnight batsmen Jeremiah Louis and Mervin Matthew put together a last pair stand of 35 runs before left-arm spinner Motie had Matthew caught at the wicket for 16.
With 268 runs ahead, Leon Johnson rightly enforced the follow on and pacers Paul and Shepherd provided instant results with their pace, bounce and movement, claiming the wickets of both openers Montcin Hodge (13) and Chesney Hughes (8), at 26-2.

Paul had Hughes edging one to Anthony Bramble on a delivery which had some extra bounce while Hodge was trapped leg before wicket.
Soon after Motie pegged the tourists further back with the wicket of Devon Thomas; Motie benefiting from a fine Johnson catch at first slip.
But Burton and Saunders then allied for a counter-attacking 64-run unbroken partnership for the fourth wicket until the interval, at 100-3.

Upon resumption, the left-handed Burton went pass his fifty but departed soon after, caught at the wicket off Rurtherford.
At the other end, Saunders brought up his fifty in company with Hamilton, and the pair then continued to frustrate the hosts until a power outage sent the players off the field.
When play finally resumed some 40 minutes after, Permaul put down Saunders when the right-hander was on 87, but the pair added 76 runs for the fifth-wicket before Permaul trapped Hamilton plumb in front for 23.

The 23-year-old Saunders then registered his hundred off 171 balls, but soon after he was dismissed, edging Motie behind, at 205-6. His innings lasted for 173 balls, inclusive of 12 fours and a six.

Permaul then bowled Rakheem Cornwall (9) while Paul and Shepherd, who both returned for respective new-ball spells removed Terance Warde (29), Gavin Tonge (1) and Jerimiah Louis (16).

Tagenarine Chanderpaul then ensured the victory with a boundary. Anthony Bramble was named man-of-the-match for his unbeaten 196.
The tournament will break for the holiday season and will resume on January 4, 2018.

Guyana Diaspora Forum

We have a large database of Guyanese worldwide.  Most of our readers are in the USA, Canada, and the UK.  Our Blog and Newsletter  would not only carry  articles and videos on Guyana, but also other articles on a wide range of subjects that may be of interest to our readers in over 200 countries, many of them non-Guyanese  We hope that you like our selections.

It is estimated that over one million Guyanese, when counting their dependents, live outside of Guyana.  This exceeds the population of Guyana, which is now about 750,000.  Many left early in the 50’s and 60’s while others went with the next wave in the 70’s and 80’s.  The latest wave left over the last 20 years. This outflow of Guyanese, therefore, covers some three generations. This outflow still continues today, where over 80 % of U.G. graduates now leave after graduating.  We hope this changes, and soon.

Guyanese, like most others, try to keep their culture and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.  The problem has been that many Guyanese have not looked back, or if they did it was only fleetingly.  This means that the younger generations and those who left at an early age know very little about Guyana since many have not visited the country.  Also, if they do get information about Guyana, it is usually negative and thus the cycle of non-interest is cultivated.

This Guyana Diaspora Online Forum , along with its monthly newsletter, aims at bringing Guyanese together to support positive news, increase travel and tourism in Guyana and, in general, foster the birth of a new Guyana, which has already begun notwithstanding the negative news that grabs the headlines.  As the editor and manager of the publication, I am committed to delivering Blog entries and Newsletters that are politically balanced, and focused on the positive ideas we wish to share and foster among Guyanese.

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0

WarrenJameis Winston is asked about being named QB3 on the Giants' roster behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart:

"As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I'm a starter in this league.

But you have to be able to be grateful for your role...my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.

No matter if I'm 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it's always a first for everything.

I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success."
