A large chunk of metal that could be from an airplane washed onto shore in southern Thailand. Authorities are warning against linking it to flight MH370 which has been missing now for almost two years. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said he told Malaysian officials to contact Thailand about the newly discovered wreckage. This location doesn't quite square with the supposed location of debris from the flight.

Evangelical leader and Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday. Falwell said Trump is “a successful executive and entrepreneur, a wonderful father and a man who I believe can lead our country to greatness again.” The leading evangelical's endorsement comes days before the Iowa caucuses and just a week after Sarah Palin, another devout Christian.

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump continued his feud with Megyn Kelly early Wednesday morning. “I refuse to call Megyn Kelly a bimbo, because that would not be politically correct. Instead I will only call her a lightweight reporter!” he tweeted. Trump’s Fox News debate boycott has ramped up a feud with the reporter that began in August.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, (Reuters) – His name is not on any ballot paper and he was toppled from power 12 years ago but the shadow of Jean-Bertrand Aristide still looms over Haiti and his supporters are at the center of a new crisis in the impoverished country.
325
Bertrand AristideDespite the divisions in his party “Fanmi Lavalas”, or “The Flood”, and his official retirement from politics, Aristide’s influence has quietly grown since he returned from exile in South Africa in 2011.
Three of the four top candidates in the flawed first round of Haiti’s presidential election in October fully or partly draw strength from Aristide’s followers, and his name is uttered with reverence by poor protesters whose violent demonstrations last week forced the run-off vote to be called off.
The moves Aristide and his political heirs make in the next few weeks could determine Haiti’s immediate future more than at any time since the former priest-turned-president was toppled from power in 2004.
“Aristide is the engine of this movement. Without him we cannot live,” said unemployed protester Fredo Dorival standing near smoldering tires and rubble at a march from Port-au-Prince’s St Jean Bosco parish, where Aristide once presided.
Haiti was supposed to choose a replacement for outgoing President Michel Martelly on Sunday but the two-man run-off was postponed indefinitely after opposition candidate Jude Celestin refused to participate over alleged fraud that sparked the protests and violence.
Aristide’s supporters want their candidates put back in the race – a position that puts them in direct conflict with both the government and the international community, and potentially with Celestin, who currently enjoys their backing as the default opposition candidate.
Aristide himself, who was twice elected president and twice ousted in coups, is constitutionally barred from running again.
Since he returned from a seven-year exile in 2011 to a country on its knees from a devastating earthquake, Aristide, 62, has kept a low public profile, officially dedicating his time to a university bearing his name.
His most recent, rare, appearances were to vote in October and to endorse Maryse Narcisse, a doctor, as Fanmi Lavalas’ presidential candidate. He did not respond to request for an interview for this article.
But he remains involved in his party’s strategy.
“He has played a role as a captain, now we hope he will accept a role as coach,” Narcisse told Reuters, adding that she consults with Aristide regularly and would want him as a senior adviser if she were to become president.
Speaking beneath a campaign poster of Aristide holding her raised hand, Narcisse said her political mentor predicted in October the vote would be “a selection not an election” – a catch phrase that has defined the opposition’s fraud claims and galvanized protesters.
“He respects the Haitian people, and the Haitian people are mobilizing,” Narcisse said. “The mobilization will continue.”
Haiti now has to decide whether the election run-off between Celestin and ruling party candidate Jovenel Moise should go ahead, or be scrapped to again include Narcisse and others.

Chinese Scientists Genetically Modify Monkeys To Exhibit Autism Symptoms

Led by a team from the Institute of Neuroscience at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai, researchers have genetically modified monkeys to feature a gene associated with autism spectrum disorder in people, resulting in the most realistic animal model for the condition yet.

Detailing their work in a study published in the journal Nature, the researchers believe that a minimum of 100 genes play a role in the types and symptoms related to autism, which affects one in 45 kids today. Specifically, they turned to MECP2, a gene that people with autism symptoms have extra copies of. This isn't the first time autism-related genes have been engineered into monkeys, but the study is the first to show that there is a link between the genes and how the animals behaved.

The creation of the first batch of genetically modified monkeys occurred in 2010, with MECP2 genes being attached to a dormant virus, which was then injected into the eggs of crab-eating macaque monkeys. After the eggs were fertilized, they were implanted into female monkeys to develop.

This resulted into eight genetically modifed monkeys with one to seven extra copies of the MECP2 gene. Stillborn monkeys were also examined and the researchers found that the gene was also expressed in extra copies in their brains.

Next, the researchers observed a year later that the monkeys involved in the study were showing behaviors hinting at autism. Further tests proved that all of the monkeys were exhibiting at least one symptom related to autism, but this was not enough to say that monkeys were sound autism models.

"We needed to show where the gene makes a difference," said Zilong Qiu, a co-author of the study.

The researchers finally got their opportunity in the next generation of monkeys they genetically modified. The resulting offspring started showing asocial behavior when they were about 11 months old, proving that the MECP2 gene and autism symptoms were passed on to the second-generation macaques in the lab.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday said that asylum-seeking migrants must return to their home countries once peace has been restored. “We need... to say to people that this is a temporary residential status and we expect that once there is peace in Syria again, once IS has been defeated in Iraq, that you go back to your home country with the knowledge that you have gained,” Merkel said at a meeting of her party members. The remarks come at a time when Merkel is facing increasing scrutiny for her open-door policy toward migrants. A poll released on Friday showed that 40 percent of Germans want Merkel to resign because of her refugee policy. About 1.1 million refugees arrived in Germany last year.

Liz Cheney, the elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is making another bid for a seat in Congress, this time for Wyoming's only seat in the House of Representatives. Cheney attempted a run for a Senate seat two years ago, but ultimately failed to secure support. She plans to formally announce her candidacy on Monday.

He is not fairing well, his former business manager, Nick Pardo, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"He's a broken man," says Pardo. "He's really becoming a recluse and doesn't want to talk to anybody, including his own family."
Adds Pardo, "He just wants to serve his time and part of him knows the only way to do that is to forget the outside world exists, which is hard to do when the outside world comes to visit you and tells you how they just went to the beach."
Pardo's description of the 68-year-old former football superstar marks a contrast to his image as a chiseled athlete, actor and TV pitchman in the days before his 1994 arrest for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman , for which he was later acquitted.
"He weighs at least 300 pounds and suffers from diabetes," Pardo says. "He got new knees before he went into prison, but the extra weight is hurting him because his knees weren't made to hold that. He needs to lose weight."
