(Barbados Nation) Trinidadian Zahra Gomes is the latest recipient of the Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholarship.
She was chosen from a field of six candidates who were interviewed today at Government House by the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee.
The Committee, which was chaired by Governor-General Sir Elliott Belgrave, also comprised Secretary, Peter Goldson; Felice Swapp, Professor Evelyn O’Callaghan, Dr Chantal Onanaiwu, Richard Skeritt and Professor Bridget Brereton.
Gomes, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, will pursue a Master of Science in Cosmology at the University of Oxford in October next year.
Explaining that Cosmology was theoretical physics and the study of how the universe began, Gomes said her field of study could have “a great impact†on the Caribbean, and, as it was not currently widely studied, her goal was to expand research in the science in the region. The other applicants for the Rhodes Scholarship hailed from Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada.
The Rhodes scholarship, named after Cecil J. Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for study at the University of Oxford. Each year, one Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholarship is awarded, with a separate Rhodes Scholarship for Jamaica.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Congrats to her for all the hard work. Good story in the Caribbean, especially at this time where death, destruction and madness roams abundantly.

this is disgraceful..that the west indian governments would still allow west indians to participate in this disgusting scholarship..especially Trinidad where is is enough money to educate all trinidadians our way, free of charge up to the highest levels..at our own schools and universities
this is 2015 and never dreamed I would see this independent day when we would still be in Rhodes programs exposing our citizens to fake shoddy racist educations at rotten western universities, of big name but which serves no useful global social purpose...only produces jac'ass graduates who go home to their countries to run them in the interest of those who set up the scholarships in the first place for that very purpose

Maps...which WI scholarship outranks the Rhodes Scholarship? The problem with you is that you don't see the trees from the forest. Relax, let the girl fly as high as she can...end this myopic view of the world. It will continue to spin long after you and I are gone.

I guess some folks really do have comprehension issues. Reading is not their forte...but perhaps it is ageism taking its toll. Perhaps it is senility. Perhaps it is personality.
Lets leave good alone.
